My Favorite Apps to Explore NYC
Apart from the generic “maps” app that comes standard on your phone, there are plenty of other apps to help navigate and explore the city. Here are ones I use on the weekly basis:
Ok, if you do not know or use Foursquare, I’m sorry to say that you need to reevaluate your life choices. Not only is Foursquare a fun game to play in which you gain points and badges for documenting your daily adventures by checking-in to every place you visit, but it helps you discover your surroundings. Foursquare informs you with the knowledge of which places around you are receiving the most traffic (trending places), places where your friends are and places they suggest you check out. You will not only step foot into a place you never even thought to explore, but you will discover a new favorite place to visit.
If you have the whole NYC subway system memorized I will have to admit you are gifted yet weird. For those of us who are normal, we need a map every now and then. NYC Mate is the perfect app for the subway system because you do not need wireless to use it. Once you open the app, it stores the information on your phone–the official subway map with train times from GTFS. You also can choose to have bus info, MetroNorth info and LIRR info. NYC Mate is so convenient!
Looking for a certain kind of restaurant, bar or just something to do in the area you are currently roaming or an area you are meeting up with friends? Where is the best app to help you find the right place for exactly what you are looking for. When I need to know the nearest sushi restaurant, I always turn on Where and it locates every sushi restaurant nearest to my location. It supplies photos, reviews, menus, etc. for each restaurant so you can make the right choice.
